Time: Monday, January 22, 2018 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Multicultural Center Alonso Family Room
Learning From Your Community is part of the Alonso Family Dialogue Series hosted by the Social Justice Engagement team in the Student Life Multicultural Center. January's program is part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
Learning From Your Community is a monthly program that provides students an opportunity to interact with Columbus community members. We invite non-profit, government, and/or business organizations in the Columbus area to share their expertise and experience with students while also connecting their organization's mission to social justice issues. These programs provide students with many networking and learning opportunities and they will take place on the third Monday of each month from 4:30-5:30pm for the Spring 2017 semester (January 22, February 19, March 19).
On January 22, we will host ASHA Ray of Hope during this program. ASHA Ray of Hope was established as a NPO in 2003 by members of the South Asian community from different backgrounds, such as physicians, educators, social workers, entrepreneurs, who became cognizant of how vulnerable South Asian women in the United States are to domestic violence. Cultural socialization, recent immigration, loss of traditional family support, lack of proficiency in English, as well as unfamiliarity with the laws and services of the United States keep many women confined in abusive situations. ASHA serves women and children from six countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It offers information and referral services to helpline callers from community at large and collaborates with networks of domestic violence providers to assist victims. ASHA delivers direct services to survivors of violence to help them become self-sufficient and transition into a safe environment.
