Makio History

From Makio, 1880

Since 1880 the Makio years there has been a yearbook published at The Ohio State University. It's name, "Makio," is a Japanese word meaning "magic mirror." From the it's original inception, the Makio was published by the three existing fraternities of the University. As time progressed, new fraternities were added and given representation on the Board of Editors.

Until 2000, Makio has been supported by Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Chi Phi, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta fraternities. Their contribution in helping to build the yearbook's foundation was invaluable.

Currently, the yearbook is a self-sustaining organization housed in the Ohio Union and advised by Union staff.

Makio has been a part of The Ohio State University since 1880. Due to funding and organization issues, production was stopped in 1994. The yearbook was re-introduced to campus in 2000 by students with the support from Ohio Staters, Inc. and other student organizations. Their tenacity along with funding and support from Student Affairs and the Ohio Union, the Makio is once again a part of the Ohio State tradition.

The Makio was reintroduced because it was felt that OSU needed to have a collegiate yearbook to capture the memories and experiences of their student's collegiate life.

In 2001, the Makio yearbook captured the years lost between 1994 and 2000 with "In the Nutshell", followed by "The Big Picture" in 2002, then "Perspectives" in 2003, then "UneXpected" in 2004, and "Time & Change" in 2005. The award winning 2006 book showcased what makes Ohio State great in "Strength in Numbers." The 2007 book "Elements" featured many aspects that compile Ohio State and the surrounding areas, which also won an award. Last year's "Turning Over A New Leaf" summed up the year for most of Ohio State's campus. Don't you want to be a part of history?
