MEMPHIS, Tenn - Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority Inc. awarded its national scholarship to an Ohio State University student who has spent the past year promoting multiculturalism while serving as chapter and colony president.

The sorority awarded the Brandy Nicole "Nikki" Murphy Scholarship to Lea Madry on June 27, 2009, during the organization’s national convention. Murphy of Florence, Ala. died in an automobile accident in 2006. She was pursuing a degree in athletic training at the University of Alabama at the time and was an active member of the sorority's Kappa Associate Chapter in Tuscaloosa.
Madry facilitated Delta Xi Phi’s first multicultural workshop at national convention this year.

Madry is an active member of the sorority’s Phi Associate Chapter at Ohio State University and helped bring the sorority to campus in 2009. She's a member of several organizations on campus and devotes time to researching the problems faced by middle class Americans. She is also an active member of the campus’s SERVICE Squad, serving her second term as president and works as volunteer coordinator.

Madry has made great strides in pursuing her goal to serve as a civil rights attorney and become a Supreme Court Justice. Serving as a mentor for the Office of Minority Affairs and being a founding member of the OSU Undergraduate Black Law Student Association shows Madry’s passion for working toward her career goals.

The scholarship recipient is announced annually at Delta Xi Phi’s national convention. The amount of the scholarship will be contingent upon the amount of donations received.

Delta Xi Phi was founded in 1994 at The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign by 15 women who created a sisterhood that embodied five pillars - the advancement of women through higher education, increasing multicultural awareness, community service, sisterhood and friendship. Since then, the sorority has grown to 20 chapters in 14 states.
