Sigma Phi Epsilon Wins Coveted 6th Buchanan Cup
 |
|
The brothers of the Ohio Gamma chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity were recently awarded their sixth Buchanan Cup at their biennial national conference known as Conclave.
The Buchanan Outstanding Chapter Award, or “Buc Cup”, is the fraternity’s highest honor presented to undergraduate chapters based upon a thorough evaluation of all areas of chapter operations during a two year period. Specifically, Buchanan Cup applications focus on five core areas: manpower, academics, member development, finances, and volunteers. This year, Ohio Gamma was one of only 42 chapters nationwide presented with the coveted award. The Ohio Gamma chapter was recognized for ending the year with 130 Brothers and a 3.41 cumulative GPA. They also celebrated winning basketball, soccer, and softball intramural championships in the fraternity league. In addition, they were recognized for their innovative programming and outstanding four year personal and professional leadership development program which emphasizes living your best life through a balance of a Sound Mind and a Sound Body with a constant will to improve.
Buc Cups are named for a former Buckeye SigEp, Edwin T. Buchanan who served Sigma Phi Epsilon as Grand Chapter President and Grand Chapter Treasurer. As a local chapter, Ohio Gamma has been presented with a total of six silver trophies. The first came in 1967 – the same year the award was named for Buchanan – then again 1991, and finally for four straight terms in 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009. The brothers will look to continue the tradition in 2011 when, if they should win, they will be presented with a golden edition to mark a Decade of Excellence.
On hand to accept the award were several members of the chapter, including: President Tom Vetter; Past-Presidents Sean Mittelman and Michael Repasky; Current and Past Vice-Presidents of Recruitment Steven Engelhaupt and Ryan Dressler; Brothers Randal Scott Dudis and Zane Roelen; and Advisor Brothers Dr. Don Stenta and Adam Burden. Mittelman was recently selected to serve as a Regional Director in the Northwest, serving Alaska, Northern California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Dudis was also recognized as a Sigma Phi Epsilon Fellow, the pinnacle of SigEp’s member development program. Fellows are only awarded to those men who exemplify the fraternity’s cardinal values and have completed a 500 hour or 60 day community service project.
