Going Green

From the physical building construction to daily operations, the Ohio Union recognizes the importance of being a good environmental steward and sharing The Ohio State University’s commitment to sustainability in the following ways:

Ohio Union is a LEED Silver Certified Green Building and is designated as an official GreenSpot by the City of Columbus.

The Ohio Union building has received LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) . According to USGBC, “LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a whole-building approach, which encourages and guides a collaborative, integrated design and construction process that optimizes environmental and economic factors.” The Ohio Union is only the second building on the Columbus campus to reach this esteemed designation.

“Green” features in the building range from a pulper which collects food waste for reuse purposes and facilities like bicycle storage that encourage alternative forms of transportation to water efficient landscaping and virtual bulletin boards to reduce paper use.  Click here for a complete listing of LEED features in the Ohio Union.

Ohio Union Green Meeting and Event Planning Guidelines

As a part of Ohio State’s commitment to creating a sustainability campus, the Ohio Union has developed Ohio Union Sustainable Meeting and Event Planning Guidelines which aim to reduce the environmental impact of events held in the building and other places on campus.  The Guidelines provide practical steps that can be taken to help event organizers and planners to “green” an event.  While this is not an exhaustive list, it does provide basic recommendations that take into consideration best practices in the areas of waste reduction, energy conservation, food, and transportation.

The Ohio Union also can assist with hosting a Zero Waste event. This concept involved special containers to sort out Compostable Materials from the Recycling and regular Trash. The staff need at least two weeks' notice to have the appropriate containers and to allow time for the Ohio Union staff to train the guests/volunteers on how to sort the trash appropriately, as it will be up to the guests to sort on the day of the event. Ohio Union staff will then ensure that everything is disposed of properly.
